What do I need to consider when choosing a platinum credit card that earns Qantas Points?

Most major card issuers offer a platinum product, which makes comparing credit cards to ensure they suit your lifestyle important. It is important to ask yourself important questions surrounding your spending and financial position.

Do you use credit a lot?

If you regularly pay with a credit card, the higher credit limit of a platinum credit card could offer you more flexibility when it comes to spending. It will also help you get the most out of features such as rewards.

Do you regularly pay off your credit card?

Platinum credit cards can have high interest rates, so be sure that you can pay off your card monthly in order to enjoy the benefits fully.

How many of the features will you use?

While it’s great to have access to the wide range of features, the value comes from actually using them. Think about the features you want and how often you will use them, to decide whether or not a platinum credit card is worth it for you.

Apart from the standard rates and fees, some of the other factors you might want to consider in your comparison include:

Rewards points

Some credit cards come with reward or frequent flyer programs, allowing you to earn reward points for every dollar you spend on eligible purchases.

Complimentary insurance

Some platinum credit cards offer complimentary travel insurance that will cover medical and hospital expenses, loss or damage to personal property, cancellation of travel arrangements and inconvenience cover while you’re overseas.

Concierge services

Some platinum cards offer a 24/7 concierge service that can help you with anything from travel bookings and restaurant reservations to sending a gift or securing concert tickets.

Airline lounge passes

Some platinum credit cards offer the added luxury of airport lounge access when you travel.

Entertainment experiences

Depending on the card network you’re with, you could take advantage of presale concert tickets, exclusive competitions, discount ticket prices and more.

How do I apply for a Platinum credit card?

How you apply will differ depending on the issuer. However, it is important to keep in mind:

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • You must have an excellent credit history.
  • You must have a regular source of income. Platinum credit cards also have higher minimum income requirements
  • Full-time employment is preferred. If you are self-employed, retired or on a pension and can provide proof of regular income, then you may also be eligible to apply.

^Estimated points calculations:

Are based on a fixed monthly spend each month for the period specified and will include the relevant card’s sign on bonus points, provided the monthly spend amount meets the minimum spend criteria.

Where 2nd year bonus points are offered and the specified time period selected is 2 years or more, these points will be included.

Include points capping and points tiers, if applicable.

Assume 100% of spend is categorised as eligible everyday domestic spend. Check the relevant T&Cs to determine what spend qualifies for points earning. For some products, international spend, government spend and spend on Qantas products and services may result in additional points, or fewer points, being awarded. Where applicable, eligible domestic spend is split into 4 categories:
  • Major Restaurants, Cafes and Hotels (6%),
  • Major Petrol outlets, Supermarkets and National retailers (16%)
  • Utilities (3%)
  • All other spend (75%)
